4x4 trails

The Western Cape has some incredible 4x4 trails, which allow you to really explore the region and see the wilderness in a whole new light. The rugged trails on offer are often challenging, but the scenery and panoramic views are worth the effort!

At Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, the Zebra Crossing 4×4 Route takes you on mainly through upland fynbos and renosterveld and offers you a chance to see rare Cape mountain zebra in its natural habitat. The route covers a large and rugged section of the reserve, taking you to and from spectacular viewpoints more than 1000m above the Little Karoo.

Walker Bay Nature Reserve provides 4×4 access to popular angling and picnic spots along Die Plaat. Visitors can access 4×4 routes from the Stanford gate (fishing trail), De Kelders Gansbaai gate and the Uilkraalsmond Franskraal gate.

At Anysberg Nature Reserve, guests can do the 21km Tapfontein circular route. For day visitors a permit is required.

The 25.6 km out and back Swartberg Nature Reserve 4x4 route starts and ends at the top of the Swartberg pass just past The Top between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert. You will find yourself cutting southeast, more or less straight across the top of the Swartberg mountain range, with views for hundreds of kilometres in almost every direction. The route is rugged. In parts, the road will need to be carefully negotiated and vehicles, drivers and passengers will be sorely tested.
