Picnicking

Designated picnic site areas are available to the public, on a first-come, first-served basis if not already reserved/booked. However, if you want to ensure you have a site, it is best to book ahead of time online.

Same day bookings close at 10 am daily. Please note that bookings are only confirmed once full payment has been received.

Most CapeNature reserves have picnic spots. Grab your friends and family, pack a picnic basket and check out what the Cape has to offer! Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking:

  • Tweede Tol in the Limietberg Nature Reserve has become a bit of an institution, so be sure to get there early enough as the gates will be closed once the picnic spots and camping sites have all been snapped up. If you’re lucky enough to get in, you can look forward to a day of relaxed swimming and fun in the company of friends and family.
  • The Goukamma Nature Reserve has beautiful picnic spots along the meandering Goukamma River.
  • There are picnic tables at the Marloth Nature Reserve entrance, as well as a picnic area adjacent to the parking lot at the start of the picturesque Duiwelsbos waterfall hike. Both areas have panoramic views of the imposing mountain ranges above.
  • Enjoy a picnic under the cool shade of the trees on the banks of the Heuningnes River at De Mond Nature Reserve. Please note: visitors may use gas braais and Webers (kettle braais), but open fires are not permitted.
  • Vrolijkheid has a lovely picnic area near the entrance, where visitors can enjoy the reserve’s tranquil beauty. Situated in the famous Winelands region, surrounded by beautiful mountains and rolling hills. Consisting of permanent picnic benches and dedicated braai spots.
  • Goukamma is a walking distance of the beach. This is the perfect location to place your bare feet on the lawn and re-energize after a long week.
  • Rocherpan is the home to a slew of wonderful experiences, with a picnic with access to a private beach in beautiful and tranquil surroundings.
  • The Assegaaibosch picnic area is in high demand for its secluded position deep in the Jonkershoek valley, rich in tall oak trees that provide a wealth of shade. Some trees are more than 200 years old and bare a fascinating history worth exploring upon your arrival. This little piece of Stellenbosch heaven is limited to 60 visitors a day, so it is best to arrive as early as possible. In the warmer months enjoy an easy to moderate walk towards the natural pools for some pleasant swimming.
  • After an exhilarating day of trad rock climbing and tracking zebra in your 4x4 vehicle, enjoy a picnic under Gamkaberg’s thatched lapa, surrounded by some of the most picturesque mountains you have yet to gaze upon in the peaceful silence of the Karoo. Make sure to fill your picnic basket with some meat to make good use of the available braai facility.
