Pay less, get more! This winter, CapeNature is giving nature lovers 40% off accommodation – which means you can now afford to visit our nature reserves more often, and linger a little longer. Perhaps you want to set yourself the challenge of visiting all of CapeNature’s reserves in one season, or maybe you simply want to frequent that one natural gem that’s stolen your heart.

This year the offer extends across all our self-catering and camping options, excluding the Whale Trail and hiking trail huts.

Simply book online or call us on (021) 483-0190.

So the question isn’t when you’ll be visiting one of our reserves, but which one you’ll visit! Luckily, we’ve got some amazing options.

WARM UP YOUR WINTER AT GROOTVADERSBOSCH NATURE RESERVE

Take Grootvadersbosch, for instance. This breathtaking nature reserve is the most significant stretch of indigenous afromontane forest left in the south-western Cape, with nearly all of the 35 typical forest tree species, including red alder, ironwood, stinkwood and yellowwood. Here you can choose to stay in comfort in one of 11 new self-catering cabins – previously forestry staff houses that have been recently refurbished, and each with its own inside braai area, kitchen, lounge with fireplace and an outside braai area. Nature lovers on the other hand might want to book one of 10 fully powered campsites overlooking the indigenous forest. Each campsite has its own braai place, and the sites are serviced by communal ablution facilities with hot water showers. The area is a treasure trove of hiking trails, mountain bike tracks and idyllic picnic spots that are just waiting to be explored – but just remember to bring your own food, firewood and braai grids!

Originally known as Melkhoutskraal, the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve encompasses 250 hectares of indigenous forest in the Langeberg region, close to Heidelberg. The name translates to “big father” in honour of Roelof Oelofse who owned the land in 1723. It has only been a reserve since 1986 and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. This is the most significant stretch of indigenous afromontane forest left in the south-western Cape, with nearly all of the 35 typical forest tree species, including red alder, ironwood, stinkwood and yellowwood. Visitors to this beautiful reserve will relish the opportunity to get out into the forest on day walks and mountain biking trails. This is an excellent birding destination with more than 196 bird species regularly spotted. Hikers are likely to bump into bushbuck and spot baboons and smaller mammals when out on the trails. Sighting the forest emperor butterfly and a subspecies of the rare ghost frog would be the highlight of a visit here, as they can only be found in this particular forest.

Is there anything better than a warm winter evening in Grootvadersbosch?

TICK CEDERBERG OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST

Another CapeNature reserve that should definitely be on your winter bucket list is Cederberg Wilderness. Located approximately 250km north of Cape Town, this 71 000ha reserve is characterised by its untouched landscapes and rock formations, not to mention the rare Clanwilliam cedar tree which inspired the name. Here you can camp out at the Algeria campsite to get up close and personal with Mother Nature, or book one of 7 chalets that range from fully-equipped to comfortable yet basic accommodation. Then again, if you’re more adventurous at heart, consider the oh-so rustic and rugged Kliphuis campsite, located on the banks of the Kliphuis River. When you’re not splashing around in the river, the mountain invites you to go hiking or exploring, and you can even engage in some traditional rock climbing – as long as you take care not to damage the rock surfaces!
