STABLES & GAMKABERG CAMPSITE: (max 16 people)

Situated near the office and info centre at the foot of the Gamkaberg overlooking the Klein Karoo Valley and the Swartberg Mountains. Various day hikes as well as the overnight trail can also be done from here.

The stables and campsite accommodation consists of three areas:

The Stables: (max 8 people) This is the ideal spot if you don't want the hassle of pitching your own tent! The old horse stables have been converted into two separate 'rooms', each room sleeps 4 people and each has its own entrance. The stables are rented out to only one group at a time. Between the two rooms is a 'kitchen' area with a table, chairs, enamel crockery and cutlery and a 2-plate gas stove and gas fridge. There is electricity and water on tap but remember to bring your torches. Mattresses are provided for the beds but you will need to bring your own bedding. A sheltered lapa/braai area is situated just in front of the stables.

Gamkaberg campsites: (2 sites with max 4 people each) Close to the Stables, are two sheltered areas in which to pitch your tent. Together with the 8 guests in the stables, there will never be more than 16 people at a time in the area. Portable braais are provided in order for you to set up your own camping area. Water is on tap at the camp area.

Ablution facilities: The camp sites and stables share a warm-water ablution facility consisting of gents & ladies shower and toilets and an outdoor work-surface and sink (about 50m from the site).

OUKRAAL CAMPSITE (sleeps max 8 people with max 3 vehicles) REPORT TO OFFICE BEFORE DEPARTING!!

This is a very remote camp site at the top of the mountain plateau (1.5 hours by 4x4). Visitors need to take all their supplies along as nothing is provided other than 8 hiker's foam matresses, limited water and limited wood. There is a long drop toilet and no shower so visitors need to bath in a basin. We recommend that visitors stay for 1 night at a time and only stay longer if they are seasoned to spending time in the wilderness.

The campsite consists of a basic but quaint stone shelter and a hearth, situated on the fynbos plateau on top of Gamkaberg with spectacular views over the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains. Tents may be pitched in the dedicated areas by the shelter. The campsite is booked out to only one group at a time and is only accessible via the 4x4 trail or via a 14.5km hike. Guests going up by 4x4 must please arrive no later than 15:00. Directions:

From Calitzdorp:
When coming from Calitzdorp take the Andries Pretorius turn off in a southerly direction and keep going. Eventually this will turn into the Old Cement Road and 24 km out of Calitzdorp you will pass AMBER LAGOON RETREAT indicated with a big sign on the left hand side. Just 200m after AMBER LAGOON RETREAT, look out for the Andrieskraal/ Rietfontein sign which is posted on the right hand side of the road opposite the turn off. DON’T TURN LEFT BUT then about 200m later is the Gamkaberg turn off to the RIGHT, now also indicated with the ZEBRA CHEVRON. We have also pasted yellow reflective tape stripes on the Old Gamkaberg sign and the tape is all that is visible at night. Follow the dirt road for another 5,9km to the info centre.

From Oudtshoorn:
When coming from Oudtshoorn take the R 62 towards Calitzdorp. Then 10.3 km out of Oudtshoorn turn left at the Gamkaberg/ Warmbad turn off onto the Old Cement Road. Approx 18 km later you will cross a bridge with white concrete railings. Then 400m later is the Gamkaberg turn off to the LEFT, now also indicated with the ZEBRA CHEVRON. We have also pasted yellow reflective tape stripes on the Old Gamkaberg sign and the tape is all that is visible at night. Follow the dirt road for another 5,9km to the info centre.
