Kogelberg Nature Reserve is considered by many to be the most beautiful of CapeNature’s protected areas. Its exceptional diversity and quality of fynbos means it is also considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
Considered by many to be the most beautiful of CapeNature’s protected areas, Kogelberg Nature Reserve earns that reputation largely to the fact that it occupies an area with minimal human interference. Its exceptional diversity and quality of fynbos means it is considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The reserve presents perhaps the finest example of mountain fynbos in the Western Cape and is a world-renowned World Heritage Site.
At Kogelberg, a sensitive core of 18 000ha of the reserve has been kept pristine and wild. Here there is much biological diversity and conservation is the priority. Only activities which do not adversely affect natural processes and wildlife are allowed.
If you have driven along the R44 between Rooiels and Kleinmond, you would have marveled at the beauty of the Kogelberg. The reserve’s pristine beauty abounds all year round – during the blazing heat of summer when green is not what you expect, or in rains and mists of winter when torrents of water cascade down rock faces that were bone dry only weeks before.
The whole area is inspirational and one of more than 400 biosphere reserves worldwide. Kogelberg was South Africa’s first registered biosphere reserve and it encompasses the entire coastal area from Gordon’s Bay to the Bot River vlei, and inland to Grabouw and the Groenland Mountain. To find out more, download the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve brochure.
Kogelberg Nature Reserve has been awarded ECO Certification by Ecotourism Australia.
How to get there
From Cape Town, take the N2 north. Just before Sir Lowry’s Pass, turn right on to Sir Lowry’s Pass Road. At the T-junction in Gordon’s Bay, turn left on to the R44, following the road along the coast, past Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay. Just before you reach Kleinmond you will see the sign for Kogelberg, taking the dirt road to the left.

Koegelberg Nature Reserve
Accom at Oudebosch, perfect accom for nature lovers.
Palmiet is simply awesome, short, but very diverse, coffe-pools, river-sand beaches, waterfalls and always cool along the river.
Odebosch and the Koegelberg trail is another story - A solid distance of 24km, a good full day in the reserve and outdoors,
Openess, gorges, cliffs, bit of rain forest, summit platau, river crossings, sea-bed of the king proteas, endless view of the Indian Ocean.
And to top it all, ending off in the botanical gardens, with a nice cupa coffee at the restuarant.
Will do this again, and again.

Thank you we had a amazing stay with the reserve on 24 and 25 July 2016. Scenic, neat, clean and friendly staff. We were sad to leave - but will visit again.
Eco toilets are excellent! - only concern that it is not childproof. The little ones who potty-train can slip into this shoot and they will play with the bucket of compost.. May be a safety clip on the seat or something.
Kind regards and again - this was the best reserve we ever visited.

We stayed at Kogelberg Nature Reserve for 2 nights in March. We were absolutley blown away by the accomodation. Beautiful style, breathtaking setting ... stunning place for a quick and romantic getaway ... that's if you ever get a booking, as this place is permanently booked out - it's that GOOD!
I attended the official opening of this facility a few years ago and vowed to return as a guest one day. A fantastic and tranquil place to be. I am looking forward to my next visit, which is coming up soon.

[…] for the beach, the next morning I tied my laces and set off to explore the mountains of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve that rise behind the town. Little did I know that my laces would be the biggest burden on a trail […]

We recently spent a weekend at the Kogelberg Eco Cabins and loved it. We also did the whitewater rafting with Gravity Adventures on the Palmiet River and can highly recommend this fun, exciting trip run by real professionals.
