Go rockpooling
[gallery columns="5" link="none" ids="1595,1596,1597,1598,1599" orderby="rand"]
Rock pools are found on the sea shore, between low-tide and high-tide levels. Look for starfish, limpets and sponges, and little schools of tiny fish. Periwinkles cluster under rocks for protection from the waves. In deeper rock pools you’ll see bright anemones and sea urchins, and if you’re lucky you might even spot an octopus!
Where to go
- Walker Bay Nature Reserve, near Hermanus
- De Hoop Nature Reserve, near Infanta and Bredasdorp
- Robberg Nature Reserve, near Plettenberg Bay.
Rockpooling tips
- The best time for rockpooling is at low tide. For reliable tide tables, go to www.sanho.co.za/tides/tide_index.htm
- Rock pools can be hard on your feet. Wear booties if you can and watch where you put your feet – there can be sharp rocks or spiny sea urchins.
- Wear waterproof sunscreen or a rash vest to protect your skin.
- Take a snorkel and swimming goggles so you can get a good view of what’s happening under water.
- Have fun, but remember the sea creatures you’re looking at live in these pools. Don’t disturb them and treat them with respect.
- Wear a hat and plenty of sunscreen.
- Go with a responsible adult who knows where they’re going.
- Take water and a snack.
- Have fun!
- Check the weather forecast before you leave and make sure you pack the right clothes for the season.
- Take nice warm bedding, unless the campsite provides it.
- Take good shoes for hiking and insect repellent.
- If you’re going to an area near a beach, mountain rivers, lakes or a swimming pool, don’t forget your swim gear!
