Group Action Projects

Action project A – Purposeful play in a natural world

A backyard hunt. For this activity you need to visit a natural space. It can be your school, local park or even a garden. The idea is to hunt for insects or any sign of them. Look for spider webs, bugs on leaves, butterflies, ants. Another option is to look at the plants in the garden and figure out which is indigenous (local), and which is not. Send us a few pictures of your bug or plant hunt and you will earn your group 100 points!

Action project B – Create a natural space in your community.

Whether you create a natural space indoors or outdoors, adding natural elements to either of these will create a space that can be used to better connect to nature. Some ideas include art from natural items, décor made from natural items or that represent them, indigenous plants, beautiful rocks, dried flowers, pathway made from rocks. Create a usable space, show us a picture of the space you created and earn 200 points.

Action project C – Start a wonder bowl at home or in the classroom

Kids love to fill their pockets with natural items. Everything from seed pods to rocks to feathers. Have a bowl that is kept at a central point that anyone can add to after nature outings – these items can be kept for show and tell or for a stunning natural addition to an indoor space. Start a wonder bowl, show us what your group collected on an outing and earn 100 points!

Action D – Visit a nature reserve for FREE during Access Week

CapeNature will open a variety of its nature reserves for free during 21 and 27 September 2024. Get your group to visit one of these reserves and earn 100 points! To get your group to better connect with nature while at the reserve, have them do a 5-minute silent walk while they listen to the stillness and natural sounds around them. Get them to touch and engage with the ground, plants and experience nature in this way. Use all the senses for an enhanced experience. For a facilitated programme or for a list of participating reserves, email learning@capenature.co.za.
