Strengthening Conservation through Collaboration: Kaapjag and CapeNature Sign MOU
A deep respect for nature at the heart of hunting
For most hunters, the essence of hunting goes far beyond the moment a trigger is pulled. It’s about the time spent in the field, immersed in the splendour of God’s creation, appreciating the delicate balance of nature. The thrill of harvesting an animal is often secondary to the satisfaction gained from being part of the natural world.
True hunters understand that for sustainable hunting to continue, the environment — its fauna and flora — must be protected and conserved. Without healthy ecosystems, the tradition of harvesting venison for the table loses its meaning and value. Therefore, conservation is not just a peripheral issue for hunters, it is a necessity.
Beyond the debate: Taking conservation seriously
While the idea that "hunting equals conservation" holds some truth, it’s not a strong enough argument to stand on its own, particularly when challenged by the anti-hunting lobby. That’s why more must be done. Words are no longer enough; meaningful, structured action is needed to prove that hunting and conservation can — and must — go hand in hand.
Kaapjag has long recognised that our role in conservation is not optional but essential. It’s a responsibility that is enshrined in our Constitution, and we are committed to upholding it.
A strategic shift in conservation leadership
To better focus our conservation efforts, Kaapjag recently restructured its internal portfolios. Rather than a single individual handling all conservation matters, we now have two dedicated portfolios working collaboratively:
â—Ź Peter Hardcastle: Conservation
â—Ź Cobus Smit: Problem Animals
This strategic decision laid the groundwork for a more formal and impactful collaboration: one that connects directly with the leading conservation authority in the Western Cape.
Formalising the partnership: MOU with CapeNature
On 7 November 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was officially signed between Kaapjag and CapeNature, marking a significant milestone in our conservation journey.
What the MOU means:
â—Ź A combined steering committee, consisting of an equal number of representatives from Kaapjag and CapeNature, was established.
â—Ź This committee will direct and oversee all collaborative conservation efforts between the two entities going forward.
● The first steering committee meeting took place on 21 May 2025 at Kaapjag’s offices, setting the wheels in motion for future initiatives.
Looking ahead: Real impact through real involvement
This partnership with CapeNature is more than a formality — it's a commitment to action. It opens doors for Kaapjag members to take part in true conservation projects that align with our core belief:
Sustainable utilisation is the only way to ensure future generations have access to unspoilt wilderness, where game roams freely and hunting remains a respected part of conservation.
Through this MOU, we are turning intention into impact. Together with CapeNature, Kaapjag is proud to lead the way in showing how responsible hunters can be champions of conservation.
