CapeNature Cubs Club Connect 2026 makes a splash with water-themed family fun

27 Feb 2026

Scores of children and their families flocked to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve over the weekend to take part in a day of learning, laughter and connection in nature as part of CapeNature’s Cubs Club programme.

Around 70 children and their families took part in the Cubs Club Connect 2026 event to celebrate this year’s theme, Water. The event highlighted the importance of freshwater ecosystems, conservation, and responsible water use and featured a wide range of interactive, water-inspired activities designed to engage children between the ages of 4 and 13 years old. Teachers, group leaders and three Cubs Clubs groups also attended the event on Saturday.

From hands-on educational games to outdoor challenges, participants were encouraged to explore the value of water in sustaining life while having fun in a safe, family-friendly environment.

Cubs Club Connect also serves as a melting pot to bring families together as was demonstrated by the lively potjie kos competition. Families prepared hearty meals while embracing the spirit of teamwork and friendly competition. The activity not only added a cultural and social element to the programme but also created an opportunity for families to connect, share stories and enjoy time together outdoors.

Cubs Club Connect continues to play an important role in strengthening relationships between families and conservation initiatives, providing impactful outdoor learning experiences that inspire young environmental enthusiasts and help broaden the appeal of CapeNature’s environmental education programme. The 2026 event successfully reinforced the Cubs Club’s commitment to environmental education through play, creativity and shared experiences.

Water Week: Protecting Our Most Precious Resource

Water is fundamental to life and essential to our daily wellbeing. While this may seem widely understood, it remains important to continually remind ourselves of the value of this finite resource. Although approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, only about 2.5% of it is freshwater available to sustain ecosystems and human needs.
