State of Biodiversity Report 2002

The Western Cape Province is fortunate to house two of the world’s biodiversity hotspots – the Fynbos and Succulent Karoo biomes. However, threats to the environment are increasing throughout the world and particularly in the Western Cape Province, where a large proportion of the land has been transformed to a state unsuitable for many of the species making up this unique biodiversity.

This has necessitated a process to evaluate, monitor and report on the status of the natural environment. From this, well informed and considered conservation plans can be drawn up to help ensure the sustainable utilisation of our natural heritage.
