World Fisheries Day 2024

World Fisheries Day is celebrated on 21 November each year and is a reminder how important it is to fish responsibly, so that there is enough for us to eat now and in future.

All our water systems are connected, all the way from the top of the mountains to the ocean and these ecosystems provide us with food. Fish forms an important part of people’s diets around the world, especially those that live close to rivers and the coast

This year’s theme reminds us how important small-scale fishers are in making sure that we have enough fish now and into the future. These fishers often use low impact, traditional fishing methods that not only feed their communities but help to create jobs.

Fish facts:

  • Small-scale fisheries (marine and inland) give jobs to around 90% of people that are involved in fisheries.
  • More than 25% of the worlds food that contains protein, is provided by fish.
  • Humans eat over 100 million tonnes of fish each year!

International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day is celebrated on 11 December  each year and reminds us how important our mountain spaces are and that they need to be protected and conserved.

Over centuries, people that live in mountainous areas have adapted to living in this environment. International Mountain Day 2024 aims to focus on solutions to some of the challenges that these communities face. As climate change becomes more and more obvious, new ideas and thinking to find solutions to problems, become even more important.

What can you do?

  • Organise and participate in activities that take place in mountain areas
  • Visit your favourite mountainous area and support the local communities

Take a photo of your favourite mountain and post it using the hashtag #MountainsMatter

World Environmental Education Day

World Environmental Education Day is dedicated to raising awareness about climate change and sustainability (this means acting in a way that protects natural resources from being depleted). It is celebrated all over the world with the hopes of improving the relationship between us and nature.

In 2025 the day will be celebrated on 26 January. The day dates all the way back to June 1972, when at a conference in Stockholm, they discussed that we need to start doing things in a similar way to improve the environment that we live in. Sustainable development is a way to meet people’s needs today, without affecting the needs of tomorrow.

Environmental Education Day in time:

  • 1972 - The United Nations Conference on Human Environment takes place
  • 1975 - Over 150 countries take part in and event “International Workshop on the Environment”
  • 2021 - World Environmental Education Day is celebrated on 14 October instead of in January
  • 2022 - The year marks 50 years since the first conference
