The Value of Outdoor Classrooms

28 Nov 2024

There is a saying that the richest classroom is roofed only by the sky. Did you know that outdoor learning gives us so much more opportunities than learning in a traditional classroom? With so much more to see and touch and do, it’s no wonder that being outside allows us to really tap into all our senses and learn through multiple dimensions.

“You will find more lessons in the woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you what you cannot learn from masters”.

Why an Outdoor Classroom?

Outdoor spaces allow for free movement, which is a very powerful way to learn. When we are able to move freely, we are less frustrated and can become much more spontaneous than when sitting behind a desk in class. When we are outdoors, we are given many more opportunities to interpret, predict and analyse information in a natural context. This is not to say that a traditional classroom does not have its place, but simply that the outdoors is a wonderful tool that can also be used to facilitate learning.

When we share an outdoor environment and engage in group activities with others, we learn to build better bonds and use our problem-solving skills at the same time. The outdoors also gives us new things to touch, smell and hear. Think about the last time you were outside. How many fascinating sounds did you hear? In fact, being outside actually helps us use our imagination better and stimulates creativity. Is nature not incredible? Who would not want to learn in a place that gives us so much?

And if that were not enough, nature also improves our health and enriches our lives. Being in nature can have a calming effect on us and even improve our mood. How amazing is that?

Environmental Education at CapeNature

CapeNature offers a variety of programmes for schools and communities on topics that range from water to biodiversity to waste. If you are unable to come to us, check in with us and see if we are able to come out to your school and bring the outdoors to you!

We also have some incredible Eco-Venues that are designed to be outdoor classrooms where you and your class can overnight in nature. Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, Vrojlikheid Nature Reserve and Potberg Nature Reserve all have stunning dorm-style accommodations at a very small fee. And if you are in a quintile 1 – 3 school, you can visit for FREE!

So, next time you or your class are planning a lesson or outing, why not try and see if you can move the class to the outdoors? It has so much to offer, after all!

Check out CapeNature's Eco Venues here!
