Beneficial bugs

30 Apr 2025

Think all bugs are just creepy? Think again! The Western Cape is home to some of the coolest insects that help people and nature every day. From pollination to pest control, insects provide us with a ton of benefits – without them, there is so much that would go wrong. Let’s meet a few of our tiny local heroes!

First up, the Cape honeybee. These buzzy little workers help pollinate Fynbos flowers, fruit trees, and veggies. Without them, we wouldn’t enjoy things like juicy apples, sweet berries, or colourful flowers. To top it off, they are also the ones making the delicious honey we spread on toast! Imagine a world without these foods!

Then there’s the ladybird beetle (you might know it as a ladybug). In the Western Cape, they love munching on pesky aphids that damage plants. They’re like the tiny guardians of your garden and keep some pesky pests at bay!

Have you seen a praying mantis? These green, stick-like insects look like they’re doing yoga—but they’re actually hunting. They eat flies, grasshoppers, and other bugs that harm plants. Talk about a natural pest control squad!

Let’s not forget the dung beetles in the Fynbos and Karoo. They might like poop (ew!), but they clean up the land and help fertilise the soil. That means stronger plants and healthier ground.

Even the shiny green flower beetles are hard at work. They help pollinate wildflowers while zooming around like tiny flying jewels.

All these bugs may be small, but they’re doing big things! From pollinating plants to protecting gardens and keeping nature clean, insects are true local legends, and they need to be protected just as much as the big animals out there.

So next time you spot a bug in your backyard, give it a cheer—it might be one of our unsung heroes!
