CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO SERVE ON THE CAPENATURE BOARD
(TWO APPOINTMENTS EFFECTIVE MARCH 2026 AND ONE APPOINTMENT EFFECTIVE APRIL 2026)
Background
CapeNature is a Schedule 3C public Entity responsible for the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Cape. It discharges this mandate in terms of Schedule 4 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, which sets out functional areas of concurrent national and provincial legislative competence.
In terms of Section 15 of the Western Cape Biodiversity Act 6 of 2021, interested parties are invited to nominate candidates for appointment by the Western Cape Provincial Minister responsible for environmental affairs (the “Minister”).
CapeNature’s objectives include:
Giving effect to the obligation of the State to act as a trustee in protecting and conserving the natural environment in the Western Cape, including the long-term ecological sustainability and resilience of biodiversity, ecosystem services and ecological infrastructure.
Ensuring human well-being and the long-term resilience of society and the economy through the conservation of the natural environment.
Enabling reasonable and sustainable access to benefits and opportunities emanating from the conservation of the natural environment.
Establishing institutional structure and organisational capacity for the effective discharge of conservation in the Western Cape.
Enabling and developing an equitable and sustainable biodiversity economy, including the promotion and development of eco-tourism in areas under CapeNature’s control.
Nominations are invited of persons with expertise and experience in one or more of the following fields:
Human Resource Management: Performance management, talent attraction and optimisation; recruitment and selection; employee relations.
Biodiversity Conservation: Knowledge on ecosystem goods and services, ecological infrastructure; natural and cultural heritage; community conservation and development; environmental education and awareness. All of these should be specifically of the greater Cape Floristic Kingdom.
Eco-tourism and Biodiversity Economy: Tourism-related business; revenue generation (including fundraising); international and domestic eco-tourism; responsible and sustainable tourism practice and community access; strategic partnership development and brand promotion.
The minimum requirements for appointment are:
A nominee must be in good standing within the community.
A nominee must reside in the Western Cape.
A nominee may not be an employee of CapeNature, nor be in the service of the State and receive remuneration for that appointment or service, nor be a member of the Provincial Parliament.
A nominee must be prepared to disclose to the Minister particulars of all registrable financial interests.
A nominee may not be a person who has been declared insolvent by a competent court.
A nominee may not be a person who has been declared of unsound mind by a competent court.
A nominee should not have been convicted of an offence and sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine.
Successfully appointed non-executive Board members will be required to:
Attend and participate in the fixed schedule of Board Committee meetings (four online meetings per year per Board Committee: July 2026; October 2026; February 2027; and April 2027).
Attend and participate at four quarterly in-person Board meetings and one online Board meeting for the year: August 2026; November 2026; February 2027; and May 2027.
Attend and participate at ad hoc Board Committee and/or Board meetings, as and when required. These may be online or in-person.
Prepare for all meetings to be attended.
Remuneration
Members are remunerated for meeting attendance and will be reimbursed for all reasonable expenses incurred for attending in-person meetings.

Please note that two Board appointments will be effective from March 2026 and one will be effective from April 2026.

Reasons why the nominee is considered to be a fit and proper person to be appointed as a member of the Board.

Acceptance of the nomination.
A complete and detailed Curriculum Vitae of the nominated candidate.
To promote representivity within the Board, nominations of candidates from the designated groups, especially of women and people with disabilities, are particularly invited. The status of the nominees to this effect must be clearly stated on the nominations to expedite the appointment process.

CapeNature is ’n Bylae 3C-openbare entiteit wat vir die bewaring van biodiversiteit in die Wes-Kaap verantwoordelik is. Hierdie mandaat word uitgevoer ingevolge Bylae 4 van die Grondwet van die Republiek van Suid-Afrika, 1996 wat die funksionele gebiede van konkurrente nasionale en provinsiale wetgewende bevoegdheid uiteensit.
Ingevolge artikel 15 van die Wes-Kaapse Wet op Biodiversiteit, Wet 6 van 2021, word belangstellende partye genooi om kandidate te nomineer vir aanstelling deur die Wes-Kaapse Provinsiale Minister verantwoordelik vir omgewingsake (die “Minister”).
CapeNature se doelwitte sluit in:
Om uitvoering te gee aan die verpligting van die Staat om op te tree as ’n trustee in die beskerming en bewaring van die natuuromgewing in die Wes-Kaap, insluitend die langtermyn- ekologiese volhoubaarheid en veerkragtigheid van biodiversiteit, ekosisteemdienste en ekologiese infrastruktuur.
Om menslike welstand en die langtermynveerkragtigheid van die samelewing en die ekonomie deur middel van die bewaring van die natuuromgewing te verseker.
Om billike en volhoubare toegang tot voordele en geleenthede voortspruitend uit die bewaring van die natuuromgewing te bewerkstellig.
Om institusionele struktuur en organisatoriese kapasiteit te skep vir die doeltreffende uitvoering van bewaring in die Wes-Kaap.
Om ’n billike en volhoubare biodiversiteitsekonomie te vestig en te ontwikkel, insluitend die bevordering en ontwikkeling van ekotoerisme in gebiede onder CapeNature se beheer.
Nominasies word aangevra van persone met kundigheid en ervaring op een of meer van die volgende gebiede:
Menslikehulpbronbestuur: Prestasiebestuur; aanlokking en optimering van talent; werwing en keuring; werknemerverhoudinge.
Biodiversiteitsbewaring: Kennis van goedere en dienste in die ekosisteem, en ekologiese infrastruktuur; natuur- en kultuurerfenis; gemeenskapsbewaring en -ontwikkeling; omgewingsopvoeding en -bewusmaking. Die bogenoemde moet alles ten opsigte van die groter Kaapse Blommeryk wees.
Ekotoerisme en Biodiversiteitsekonomie: Toerismeverwante besigheid; inkomstegenerering (insluitend fondsinsameling); internasionale en binnelandse ekotoerisme; verantwoordelike en volhoubare toerismepraktyk en gemeenskapstoegang; strategiese vennootskapsontwikkeling en handelsmerkbevordering.
Die minimumvereistes vir aanstelling is:
’n Genomineerde moet goeie aansien in die gemeenskap geniet.
’n Genomineerde moet in die Wes-Kaap woonagtig wees.
’n Genomineerde mag nie ’n werknemer van CapeNature wees of in diens van die Staat wees en vergoeding vir sodanige aanstelling of diens ontvang nie, en mag ook nie ’n lid van die Provinsiale Parlement wees nie.
’n Genomineerde moet bereid wees om besonderhede van alle registreerbare finansiële belange aan die Minister bekend te maak.
’n Genomineerde mag nie ’n persoon wees wat deur ’n bevoegde hof bankrot verklaar is nie.
’n Genomineerde mag nie ’n persoon wees wat deur ’n bevoegde hof as ontoerekenbaar verklaar is nie.
’n Genomineerde moes nie aan ’n misdryf skuldig bevind en tot gevangenisstraf sonder die opsie van ’n boete gevonnis gewees het nie.
Die volgende sal van suksesvol aangestelde nie-uitvoerende Raadslede verwag word:
Bywoning van en deelname aan die vasgestelde skedule van Raadskomiteevergaderings (vier aanlyn vergaderings per jaar per Raadskomitee: Julie 2026; Oktober 2026; Februarie 2027 en April 2027).
Bywoning van en deelname aan vier kwartaallikse in-persoon-Raadsvergaderings en een aanlyn Raadsvergadering per jaar: Augustus 2026; November 2026; Februarie 2027 en Mei 2027).
Bywoning van en deelname aan ad hoc-Raadskomitee- en/of Raadsvergaderings, soos en wanneer nodig: Dié vergaderings kan aanlyn of in persoon wees.
Voorbereiding vir alle vergaderings wat bygewoon sal word.
Vergoeding
- Lede word vergoed vir die bywoning van vergaderings en sal betaal word vir alle billike uitgawes wat vir die bywoning van in-persoon-vergaderings aangegaan word.
Besonderhede van afsprake
Let wel: Twee aanstellings op die Raad sal met ingang van Maart 2026 wees en een aanstelling sal met ingang van April 2026 wees.

Redes waarom die genomineerde beskou word as ’n geskikte en gepaste persoon om as ’n lid van die Raad aangestel te word.
’n Ondertekende brief van die genomineerde kandidaat, insluitend die volgende besonderhede:
Die naam, woon- en posadres en telefoonnommer van die genomineerde kandidaat.
Aanvaarding van die nominasie.
’n Volledige en gedetailleerde Curriculum Vitae van die genomineerde kandidaat.
Ter bevordering van verteenwoordiging op die Raad, word nominasies in die besonder aangevra van kandidate uit die aangewese groepe, veral van vroue en mense met gestremdhede. Die status van die genomineerdes in dié verband moet duidelik op die nominasies gemeld word om die aanstellingsproses te bespoedig.
