Empowering women to grow through CapeNature

CapeNature has a special EPWP programme to empower women through peer assistance, informative talks, nature walks, talks, yoga, meditation and special events.

Overcoming social problems such as abuse and negative peer pressure. Tackling financial problems such as budgeting and managing credit. Grappling with educational challenges. Gaining awareness of issues around physical and mental health and fitness.

CapeNature is addressing these issues and more as part of its special EPWP programme to empower women through peer assistance, informative talks, nature walks, talks, yoga, meditation and special events.

Some of the successful programmes over the past few years have included:

  • Landscape East: The 2019 Women Empowerment programme at Robberg near Plettenberg Bay, where 63 participants from Knysna, Uniondale, Zoar (Kannaland), George and Oudtshoorn came together. The Plett Hospice addressed issues such as women’s health, the role of women, family planning, importance of pap smears, cancer and cancer checks. The exercise session started with warm-up exercises coordinated by CrossFit Plettenberg Bay. The day culminated with a 5km fun walk from Piesang Valley Hall to Robberg Nature Reserve.
  • Landscape West: A wellness day where participants of Mamre and Riverlands participated in a Zumba class and attended a presentation on what to look out for if you suspect that you have TB or HIV and the treatments for these diseases. Afterwards, blood pressure testing, as well as testing for TB and HIV, were offered for participants who wished to be tested.
  • Landscape Central: A women’s empowerment event was held at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, attended by 64 women in EPWP jobs in the Jonkershoek, Vrolijkheid, Marloth and Limietberg reserves, as well as the Genadendal reserve (which is part of the bigger Vrolijkheid reserve) and participants from Working on Fire at Jonkershoek. The proceedings included an informative talk about sexual harassment in the workplace, choir performances and a nature hike.
