Western Cape State of Conservation Report 2025

CapeNature is proud to release the 2025 Western Cape State of Conservation Report – our annual snapshot of the province’s biodiversity health, protected areas, and progress in conservation management.

This year's report highlights notable gains in expanding the conservation estate, with an additional 13,117.41 hectares formally protected through stewardship and strategic land acquisitions. These additions raise the protected area network under CapeNature’s mandate to 1,095,428 hectares (as at 31 March 2025).

The report also tracks ecological indicators across species, habitats, and ecosystems to assess their ability to withstand pressures such as climate change, habitat fragmentation, and invasive species.

Key themes from the 2025 report include:

  • Continued efforts to strengthen biodiversity resilience in the face of climate change.
  • Collaborative partnerships that are driving landscape-scale conservation.
  • The integration of biodiversity monitoring data into strategic decision-making and reporting.

By connecting science, stewardship, and strategy, this report emphasizes CapeNature’s commitment to safeguarding biodiversity for the benefit of current and future generations.
