Summer Time, Adventure Time

Come and explore the vast open spaces at one of our 25 Nature reserves situated across the Western Cape for your perfect summer getaway.

CapeNature aims to keep its holiday destinations affordable and accessible for as many households as possible and wants to see more locals explore and experience the rich natural heritage exclusive to this province.

With so many different destinations and activities to choose from, you will most likely find more than one favourite. We have an array of activities to do, ranging from hiking, mountain biking, swimming bird watching and so much more.

Our Nature reserves offer a wide selection of self-catering accommodation and campgrounds inclusive of wilderness, basic pop-up and luxury tented glamping campsites.

Here are five must visit locations to choose from:

1. Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve – near Swellendam

Situated only 2 ½ hours from Cape Town, Grootvadersbosch Nature reserve lies in the heart of the rustic Langeberg region between Swellendam and Heidelberg and nestled in between the Afromontane Forest. Wake up to panoramic views of an enchanted forest and a choir of chirping birds in arguably one of the most beautiful places in the Overberg. Visitors to this beautiful reserve will relish the opportunity to get out into the forest on day walks and mountain biking trails. This is an excellent birding destination with more than 196 bird species regularly spotted.

This reserve has a magical, fairy tale quality, leaving visitors with the lasting impression that they have stepped into another world. Hikers walk in the dappled light of the precious indigenous forest and swim in the cool tea-coloured river water while shaded by ancient trees.

This reserve now provides a variety of accommodation options, from comfortable and well-equipped cabins to a range of camping styles, with basic plots to private and convenient newly launched glamping tents.

2.Kogelberg Nature Reserve – near Kleinmond

Situated only 90 minutes from Cape Town, the Kogelberg Nature reserve lies between Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay. This reserve brings the Overberg’s beauty right to your doorstep.

Situated in the Palmiet River valley at the imposing mountains lies the Palmiet and Mbali collection eco-cabins. Considered to be the most beautiful of CapeNature’s protected areas and earned its reputation largely to the fact that it occupies an area with minimal human interference.

Its exceptional diversity and quality of fynbos means it is considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. The reserve presents perhaps the finest example of mountain fynbos in the Western Cape and is a world-renowned World Heritage Site.

The self-catering hideaway in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom is an accessible haven for nature lovers.

3. Cederberg Wilderness Area – up the West Coast

Situated only 3 hours north of Cape Town is the Algeria and Kliphuis cottages within the Cederberg Wilderness Area, stretching from the Middelberg Pass in Citrusdal to the north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam.

This is one of the most undisturbed and secluded places in South Africa. The reserve is highlighted by its breathtaking scenic mountainous wilderness area.

In an area entrenched in history, you can spend an entire day searching for rock art, caves and cliffs. After being proclaimed a wilderness area in 1973, the Cederberg is now one of eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa and home to the beautiful Clanwilliam cedar tree, which overhangs some of the cliffs.

CapeNature offers a wide range of accommodation offerings, from secluded mountain huts to fully equipped cottages.

Upgrades to the Rietdak and Garskraal cottages have recently taken place at the Algeria reserves. These cottages still have their charming character with a modern finish inside.

4. Gamkaberg Nature Reserve – near Oudtshoorn

What could be more relaxing and rewarding than spending a day or two in nature, whilst having all the luxury modern amenities? None other than Gamkaberg Nature Reserve.

Located 35km outside of Oudtshoorn, the reserve has become known to tourists as a place to switch off and bask in the richness of the unique Klein Karoo biodiversity. With luxury accommodation available at the Tierkloof Eco Lodges, the reserve offers the perfect balance for those looking to get in touch with nature during the day and those who prefer the comfort of a luxury tent at night. Pack in the sunscreen – it will be a scorcher!

5. Keurbooms Nature Reserve- near Plettenberg Bay

Situated in the lush Garden Route just outside Plettenberg Bay is an exquisite small reserve of Keurbooms River Nature Reserve. The Keurbooms river passes through the reserve bringing an abundance of water from further up in the Tsitsikamma Mountains to enter the ocean through the stunning estuary. Known as one of the favourite destinations for local travellers, this is one of the only reserves that you would need to row to your accommodation and promising an undiluted nature experience of indigenous forest, unspoilt river gorge and protected kloofs. One overnight hut is available for up to 10 guest who wants to spend more time on this beautiful reserve. Who knows – you might be lucky enough to spot a leopard-like a few of our visitors earlier this year.
