The Fire Triangle: Fire’s Not-So-Secret Recipe
Fire might look like it has a mind of its own, but it actually needs three important ingredients to survive:
🔥 1. Heat – The Spark
Every fire needs something to get it started — a spark, flame, lightning strike or another heat source. Without enough heat, there’s no ignition.
🌿 2. Fuel – Something to Burn
Fire needs food too! Dry grass, leaves, branches, wood and other vegetation can all act as fuel. The drier the vegetation, the easier it can be for fire to spread.
💨 3. Air – The Breath of Fire
Fire needs oxygen from the air to keep burning. Take away enough oxygen and those flames will soon run out of puff!
Together, these three ingredients form the Fire Triangle. 🔺
Think of it like a three-legged stool: all three legs are needed to keep the stool standing. Take away just one leg and down it goes! In the same way, remove heat, fuel or oxygen, and a fire cannot continue burning.
🌡️ And what does El Niño have to do with it?
El Niño can influence weather patterns and, in some periods, contribute to hotter and drier conditions. This can dry out vegetation, creating more available fuel for fires and potentially increasing fire risk.
That’s why during hot, dry conditions, a tiny spark can become a big problem. 🔥
The good news? Understanding the Fire Triangle helps us understand how fires start, spread, and — most importantly — how we can help prevent them.
Remember: Take away one side of the triangle, and you can take the fire out of the equation!
