Recycling waste

Here are some of the different things that you can recycle. Why not help reduce the waste problem by trying out some of these?

  • Start a compost heap (and earn a whopping 150 points!)

Garden waste (weeds, leaves, grass cuttings) and food waste (peelings and table scraps) can be used to make compost to feed and grow new plants.

   - Start your compost pile on bare earth

   - Lay twigs and straw first

   - Add your compost materials, mentioned above, in layers, one day dry, one day wet

   - Keep your compost moist

   - Research what can and cannot be composted

    • Recycle glass, tin, metal, oil, paper, e-waste or plastic (25 points per type)

Show us that you are recycling any of these seven types of waste and you will earn 25 points per type that you are recycling. Send a picture of you dividing up your waste up into different types, placing these in a recycling bin or dropping it off at a recycle depot.

       - Oil from cars can be sent to special companies that recycle it. One liter of oil can                    contaminate millions of liters of water!

       - E-waste is anything electronic and these parts can be re-used, donate them or send              them in for recycling.

       - Glass, metal, tin and plastic should also be cleaned and separated to recycle.

       - Paper should be office paper, newspaper, magazines and/or cardboard.

       - Wet waste cannot be recycled. This includes things like nappies, paper towels, tissues          and used pizza boxes.

      • Make an eco-brick (100 points)

Step 1 – Save non-recyclables such as foil from teabags, chips and sweet wrappers, plastic tags and packaging stickers.

Step 2- Clean and dry a 2-liter cooldrink bottle.

Step 3- Fill the bottle with the non-recyclable materials and use a stick to compress it to the bottom.

Step 4 -Close the bottle and drop it off at an eco-brick depot.
