CapeNature goes cashless at select nature reserves
In line with its commitment to service excellence, sustainability, and safety, CapeNature is excited to announce the transition to a fully cashless payment system at five of its flagship nature reserves from 2 February 2026.
The move will streamline operations, reduce queue times, and enhance the visitor experience while reducing the risks associated with cash handling.
The following reserves will adopt the cashless system:
- Robberg Nature Reserve (Plettenberg Bay)
- Keurbooms Nature Reserve (Plettenberg Bay)
- Stony Point Nature Reserve (Betty’s Bay)
- Bird Island Nature Reserve (Lambert’s Bay)
- Walker Bay Nature Reserve (Hermanus)
Accepted Payment Methods:
- Debit/credit cards (Visa, Mastercard)
- Mobile payments (Scan to Pay)
- Pre-bookings via www.capenature.co.za
- Telephonic bookings through the CapeNature Contact Centre (087 087 8250)
Going cashless enables us to offer a more secure and efficient experience for our visitors. We’ve taken great care to prepare our teams and ensure our visitors have multiple payment options available for their convenience. As with any change we understand and expect that there may be some implementation issues during the transition, our visitors are always welcome, and we ask that if required that you offer our transition a little patience and understanding.
Visitors are encouraged to pre-book their permits online to avoid any disappointment at the gate. For those arriving without a booking, speed point devices and QR code mobile-friendly payment options will be available on site.

From 5 October 2026, guests at three participating nature reserves can bring gently used clothing, blankets and other essential items for local non-profit organisations. Radio network upgrade to strengthen emergency communication in Hangklip area
CapeNature and Overstrand Municipality will install a small radio repeater station near Hangklip Peak as part of an upgrade to the region’s radio communication network. The repeater will strengthen the communication networks used by both parties and improve coverage across the Overstrand municipal area, Kogelberg Nature Reserve, Betty’s Bay Marine Protected Area and parts of the City of Cape Town. The Western Cape’s biodiversity is facing mounting pressure, with a sharp increase in the area affected by fires and more ecosystems and species classified as threatened, according to the Western Cape State of Conservation Report 2026. Cape fur seal safety remains important this World Rabies Day
On World Rabies Day (28 September), CapeNature is reminding residents and visitors to keep a safe distance from Cape fur seals and to act immediately if they or their pets are bitten, scratched or exposed to a seal’s saliva. Rabies has been detected in Cape fur seals along the South African coastline and by the end of 2025, at least 176 people had been bitten by seals. While most seals do not pose a threat to people, they are wild animals and should never be approached, touched, fed or encouraged to interact with humans.
