Reforest Fest returns to tackle climate action in the Western Cape

25 Feb 2026

As the Western Cape recovers from one of its worst fire seasons on record, with over 132,000 hectares burned across the region in January alone, Greenpopʼs Reforest Fest returns this Easter weekend with a sense of renewed urgency.

The four-day restoration festival at Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat aims to plant 5,000 indigenous trees in degraded forest patches as part of Greenpopʼs ongoing work in the region. In addition to facilitating restoration, the event will host a range of expert-led workshops on topics including sustainable land use, agroforestry and permaculture, and food gardening.

CapeNature is providing some much-needed shade for the festival this year. The event is big on functional branding only and CapeNature is helping out in this regard. We are also sponsoring learners goodie bags following a waste management competition.

This community-based restoration effort is timely, as invasive species and poor land management fuel devastating fires in the region.

We've been doing this restoration work for 15 years. And this year's fires have shown exactly why it matters so much. Every indigenous tree we plant is more fire-resilient than the invasive species choking our landscapes. A weekend like this is a step toward healthier, safer ecosystems.

Misha Teasdale, Greenpop Co-founder and CEO.

The Western Cape's fire crisis has intensified due to unchecked invasive species, which burn hotter and spread fire faster than indigenous Fynbos vegetation. Despite warnings from botanists and fire ecologists, municipal land management efforts have faltered, making community-led restoration efforts like Reforest Fest even more critical.

Greenpop offers a proven and scaled model for community-based ecological action. Over one weekend, thousands will give back to the land and gain valuable lessons in environmental stewardship through:

  • The planting of 5,000 indigenous trees.
  • Attending an Agroforestry and Permaculture workshop led by Alex Kruger, a pioneer in South African Permaculture.
  • Participating in a Bioregionalism workshop with Sara Featherstone, an international Bioregional Researcher.
  • Being a part of several other environmental action sessions.

This isn't a reaction to one fire season. Reforest Fest is a part of a decades-long commitment to community restoration. But right now, as communities watch their landscapes burn, this work feels more urgent than ever. We're giving people tangible hope and a way to be a part of the solution.

Claudia Waller, Greenpop Events Lead.

Since 2011, Greenpop has planted 162,645 trees in degraded forest patches at the Platbos Forest Reserve, Bodhi Forest and surrounding properties. This yearʼs festival is a continuation of this longstanding effort.

Reforest Fest is community-based restoration at work: neighbours, friends and visitors turning eco-anxiety into action.

The perfect time for a family escape into nature

Winter in the Western Cape is often misunderstood. While many people think of it as a season best spent indoors, it is actually one of the most rewarding times to slow down, reconnect, and take a short break close to home. For domestic travellers, especially families planning around the school holidays, winter offers the ideal opportunity to step away from routine without the stress of long travel or high-season crowds. It is a chance to rediscover what is right on your doorstep.

Impact of Inclement Weather across CapeNature Reserves in May 2026

The last bout of extreme weather began in early May, when a cut-off low-pressure system hit the Garden Route. A week later, two powerful cold fronts swept through the rest of the Province, unleashing torrential rains and gale-force winds. The result has been widespread damage, with 85% of all reserves reporting at least some form of damage. The Cederberg region has emerged as the hardest hit.
